One of the greatest cultural shifts we have seen in the last half century is that of our opinion towards sexual health. Where once we hid such topics out of sight and considered talking about them to be “untoward”, we now hold a much different viewpoint.
More and more, we as a society are learning that these topics are not something to be embarrassed about but something to explore. As we explore, we gain knowledge about how to care for our sexual health and nurture our sexuality.
Enter, the sexologist.
Sexologists are trained professionals who specialize in various areas of sex and sexuality.
Sexology as a focus has been around for a long time. However, sexology as a certified profession is a relatively new discipline that has been a natural outgrowth of our society’s sudden sexual awakening. But we are fast growing to realize the many benefits of working with sexologists, as their expertise can guide us through managing everything from intimate communication to sexual dysfunctions and much more.
Finding the Right Sexologist in Toronto
There are many kinds of sexologists. In the overview, we could break these into two main types: research and clinical. Today, we are going to focus on the latter, as clinical sexologists are the type that most people seek out.
By its very nature, sexology does not have a narrow focus, so clinical sexologists come from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as psychology, counselling, eastern medicine and many more. What unites them is that they are all certified in their various fields and have undergone additional certification and testing to be called a sexologist. This testing is done through a properly recognized and accredited body, such as the American Board of Sexologists (ABS) or the Institute of Authentic Tantra Education® (IATE).
This certification is a very important piece of the puzzle as it shows that the person you are choosing to do this intimate work with is capable, trustworthy and adheres to professional standards of the duly accredited organizing body who has certified them as a sexologist. The work that sexologists undertake with their clients touches on deeply intimate topics, and it is important that there is trust that they are qualified to do the job.
In the same way that sexologists come from different specialties, they also may specialize in certain areas of sexual well-being. There are sexologists who specialize solely in the physical aspects, such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, or low libido. Some choose to specialize in 2SLGBTQIA+ topics. Others are focused on helping survivors of sexual trauma. There are also sexologists who work from a more rounded approach and may see many diverse types of cases.
The therapeutic methods a sexologist uses can vary as well. Depending on their training and specialties, sexologists may use anything from CBT and EFT to the somatic, trauma-informed healing modalities taught in schools like IATE. The type of modalities used vary widely based on the training of the practitioner, the specific scenario the client faces, and of course, the client’s wishes.
When you are looking for a sexologist, there is a lot to consider, and it is ok to do so. In the end, taking your time to look carefully at things such as a practitioner’s personality, experience, and your comfort level with them will help you get the care you need and ensure the right fit. You should feel safe and comfortable with the practitioner with whom you are working.
Resources for Finding a Sexologist in Toronto
There are a number of organizations that have lists of sexologist practitioners available for people to browse through. However, we recommend you look for organizations that have some sort of accreditation and/or other government recognition as these will be the most reliable sources of information.
As such, we recommend checking out the American Board of Sexologists. If you are looking for a Canadian government-accredited organization, The Institute of Authentic Tantra Education® maintains a list of certified practitioners. Due to their government accreditation and rigorous curriculum, all IATE graduates qualify to register as certified sexologists with the ABS.
In Summary
It is likely clear at this point that sexology and the choosing of a sexologist is a far deeper well than most assume. Sexology as a specific discipline is still emerging and finding its feet. This leads to some people simply hanging out a shingle and not actually taking the time to test and qualify properly, which can lead to disastrous outcomes.
Take your time to choose the sexologist that is right for you, qualified and has the experience and methods to treat the issues you want to work on. This is a fundamentally important part of ensuring you receive the best care and have the best experience possible.
